Zanzibar
All About Spice, Sand & Serenity

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa that entices travellers with its turquoise waters, soft white sandy beaches, and swaying palms under warm tropical skies. The enchanting main island, Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar is a true Indian Ocean paradise, where visitors are welcomed by the friendly smiles and rich cultural traditions of the Zanzibari people. Located just a short distance from mainland East Africa, Zanzibar offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and fascinating history. The island is renowned for its spice plantations, winding alleyways of Stone Town, and vibrant markets, alongside idyllic resorts and pristine coastlines.

Zanzibar enjoys a warm tropical climate throughout the year, with two main seasons: the dry season from June to October and a warmer, more humid season from November to March. The island is a year-round destination, perfect for sun-seekers, culture enthusiasts, and adventure lovers alike. The islandโ€™s beaches are its crown jewel, with coral reefs and clear waters offering superb opportunities for diving, snorkeling, and swimming. Beyond the coast, visitors can enjoy spice tours, dhow sailing trips, cultural experiences in historic Stone Town, and even encounters with red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest. Zanzibar truly has it all โ€“ whether you wish to unwind on the beach, explore its rich history, or absorb the vibrant island life.

WHAT TO PACK FOR ZANZIBAR

For your holiday to Zanzibar, pack light, comfortable and airy clothing suited to the islandโ€™s tropical climate. Casual and semi-casual wear is acceptable in most tourist areas, but it is important to dress modestly out of respect for local customs, as Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Revealing clothes such as very short shorts or skimpy tops should be avoided, especially in towns and villages.

When visiting religious sites such as mosques, ensure that shoulders and knees are covered, and women may find it useful to carry a light scarf to drape over their heads if required. Shoes should always be removed before entering sacred places. Beachwear is perfect for resorts and private beaches, but it is respectful to cover up when leaving these areas. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are essential for protection against the strong equatorial sun, while a light rain jacket can be handy during the rainy seasons. Always ask permission before photographing local people, as this is considered polite.
